Dig Safe Program

In Massachusetts, a Dig Safe notification is required for any excavation work. According to the Massachusetts Dig Safe Law (G.L. c. 82, sections 40-40E) and the Dig Safe Regulation (220 CMR 99.00), excavation is broadly defined as movement or removal of earth, rock, or other materials in the ground including but not limited to digging, blasting, augering, backfilling, test boring, drilling, pile driving, grading, plowing in, hammering, pulling in, jacking in, trenching, tunneling and demolition of structures. This includes installing stakes in the ground to support a tent or canopy as well as installing signs.

Dig Safe Permit Request

All Dig Safe requests for areas on the Amherst Campus, Charles River Campus, Cold Spring Orchard, Hadley and Deerfield Farms shall be submitted at least 10 working days but not more than 30 calendar days prior to the start of work requiring the Dig Safe.

Outside contractors must submit a Dig Safe request through MA Dig Safe or by calling 811. Campus partners working with outside vendors should likewise direct vendors to submit requests through MA Dig Safe or by calling 811.

Dig Safe Certification

Dig Safe Certification is required for employee excavators and non-employee (e.g. external contractors) excavators.
