Lisa McLeod, professor of philosophy at Guilford College, will deliver a lecture entitled, "The Good Citizen and the Common Good: W.E.B. Du Bois's World Search for Democracy," as part of our Fall visiting scholar series.

In 1937, Du Bois attempted to publish a book that was drawn from his travels through Europe and Asia in 1936. The work, A World Search for Democracy, is an epistolary novel that sets out to find democracy in the world and, failing that, articulate the conditions for and the moral necessity of true democracy. I argue that the work constitutes an important bridge between Du Bois's earlier work on anti-racism in the U.S. and his later work, which took on anti-colonialism, socialism, and peace on a global scale.
