Teaching nature of science (NOS) effectively has been a goal of science education for decades, but is one that is still proving difficult to attain. I will present my research on supporting elementary teachers in effectively teaching NOS through read-alouds using modified science trade books and educative curriculum materials. I will describe an intervention that both supports teachers’ understanding of NOS and guides their pedagogical decisions during read-alouds. Findings indicate that both teachers and students interacted more with NOS concepts during read-alouds of modified books and changed their views of NOS to be more in line with the views described in the standards.
