This even has been POSTPONED.

Chemical demonstrations that feature spectacular explosions and color changes are commonly featured items in science outreach programs. In this talk, D. Venkataraman will discuss his outreach efforts over the past 15 years and what he has learned from their effectiveness. He has succeeded in engaging K-12 students, teachers, and the general public using traditional methods such as demonstrations, hands-on experiments, and lectures.

Venkataraman is a co-organizer for Amherst Regional Middle School (ARMS) Science Club along with Ms. Jennifer Welborn, ARMS science teacher. Together they decided to structure the activities thematically similar to Integrated Concentration in Science (iCons) program at UMass Amherst. This club provides valuable opportunities to translate educational innovations at UMass Amherst to the Amherst school system. Venkataraman will share the details of what they did in the science club and lessons learned from the experience.

Most STEM seminars are held at 4 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month during the academic year. The events are free and open to the public; no reservations needed. Parking is available in the nearby Campus Center Garage. Refreshments will be available.
