Slavery in the Valley: Impact of Slavery in Florence and Northampton, Ma.

Steve Strimer, Director of The David Ruggles Center, will give a talk and media presentation about African Americans’ presence in the Underground RailRoad in Florence and Northampton, Ma., and will discuss the role of Blacks in Florence. This presentation will also explore Florence as a destination for fugitive slaves and the silk industry that employed them.
In addition, this presentation will include discussion about abolitionists like David Ruggles and Sojourner Truth who resided in Florence. Their homes are still standing, along with the houses of other blacks such as Basil Dorsey and Thomas H. Jones. This event covers an over alla discussion about African Americans' lived experience in Florence.
