Apart from the Manns, no one family has influenced modern German culture 
more than the Cassirers. Prosperity in trade and industry brought them 
into the world of art and philosophy, pedagogy and medicine, literature 
and theater, until they were forced to emigrate by Hitler. Sigrid

UMass Amherst. Her recent books include “Else Lasker-Schüler. Biographie,” 
(Wallstein Verlag, 2004) and a commented edition of the letters of 
Rainer Maria Rilke and Eva Cassierer (Wallstein, 2009).
