The Resistance Center for Peace and Justice: 36th Annual MLK Day Celebration

Take part in The Resistance Center’s longest standing tradition as we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Our day-long celebration will begin with coffee and hot chocolate at 10:00 a.m. in Florence at the Sojourner Truth statue for the Afro-American Walking Tour. Social justice community workshops facilitated by local activist groups will then take place from noon-2 p.m. at Edwards Church in Northampton. We will end the day with a convocation from 2-3:30 p.m. with music, keynote speaker Amilcar Shabazz, professor in the UMass Amherst W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies and special guest U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern.
Afro-American Walking Tour
Our friends at the the David Ruggles Center in Florence will begin the morning at 10 a.m. at the Sojourner Truth Statue for the Afro-American Walking Tour lead by Steve Strimmer. Coffee and hot chocolate will be provided.
Social justice community workshops will by lead by local activist groups. Workshops will take place at Edwards Church and will each be an hour long, from noon to 1 p.m.and then 1 to 2 p.m. Groups include the Latin America Solidarity Coalition of Western Massachusetts , Pioneer Valley Democratic Socialists of America, Palestine Solidarity, Climate Action Now, and more. At 2 p.m. in Edwards Church, we will conclude our celebration with live music and hear from keynote speaker Professor Amilcar Shabazz, of the UMass Amherst W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studeies about MLK’s legacy today. We will then be joined by U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern for further remarks.
