Life can be hard. For every rainbow there is rain, and for every silver lining there is, of course, a dark cloud preceding it. Every soul has a burden to bear, some heavier, and some lighter. The world tends to see those hardships as deplorable, as nothing more than an obstacle to be avoided and shunned, but who would you be without the elements, good or bad, that make up your life? What paths would you have walked had not you traversed a few unexpected detours?
Without A Trace: Breaking Borders is a BFA Thesis Exhibition by Melanie A. Griffith that focuses on how her struggles with anxiety, self-depreciation, depression, and a blurred line between fantasy and reality eventually led her to a future she did not expect. The show focuses on the 'faults and failures' that she, and many others face in life, and journey through how art, cartooning specifically, was able to break her free from the borders the world had set against her, and that she had set around herself. Sometimes borders are meant to be broken, it's just a matter of acknowledging where the cracks reside, and taking that first step toward freedom.

Herter Art Gallery is located at the north end of Herter Hall west of the Fine Arts Center. Public parking is available at all times behind the Robsham Visitors Center and at meters along Haigis Mall. Nights and weekends parking is also available in Lot #71, west of the Whitmore Administration Building.
