October 25, 2019
7:00 pm-8:00 pm
Herter Art Gallery
UMass Amherst Campus
In celebration of Herter Art Gallery's 50th anniversary, experience a special gallery walk-through that will showcase the recent art and honor the memory of renowned artist and former faculty member, George Wardlaw, who passed away in July, 2019.
The gallery will feature Disruptions & Continuities: New and Recent Work by George Wardlaw. The exhibition features work from the last five years as well as his final series, “Disruption,” the product of a mentorship between Wardlaw and Kelsi Giguere '18, a practicing artist and recent graduate from the Department of Art at UMass Amherst. Giguere, painted Wardlaw's vision with his instruction and guidance as his health declined. Shown at the Herter Gallery for the first time, the results of this collaboration are impressive and inspirational—with Giguere carrying out Wardlaw’s ideas on canvas with her own markings and color choices.
The oldest exhibition space on campus, Herter Art Gallery is a significant landmark in the University's commitment to public education as well as the cultural history of the region. It supports the teaching mission of the Department of Art, to which it belongs, by supporting pioneering, and redefining contemporary art.
