Film Screening: 'An American Ascent'
April 25, 2017
6:00 pm-9:00 pm
Campus Center
Room: 904
UMass Amherst Campus
Join us for a film screening of "An American Ascent." The film chronicles the journey of the first group of African Americans to attempt to summit Denali, North America's largest peak. The event will include a conversation about diversity in the outdoors, a Q&A about the film and opportunities with NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) from a NOLS representative. The event is free, open to the public, and there will be pizza.
In 2013, NOLS, with help from The North Face and REI, gathered a team of African American climbers to attempt to be the first team of color to climb Denali, the highest physical point in North America. NOLS partnered in the creation of the film with the hope of addressing the often overlooked issues of race and the outdoors, while chronicling the many challenges of climbing one of the world’s most iconic peaks.
