"After The Fire," a special fire safety program with guest speakers Alvaro Llanos and Shawn Simons.

The program, being sponsored by Environmental Health and Safety, will include a showing of the documentary “After The Fire: A Story of Heroes and Cowards,” which is based on the r Robin Gaby Fisher’s seven-part series in the Newark Star-Ledger and later New York Times bestselling book, “After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival.

Alvaro Llanos and Shawn Simons are survivors of the Jan. 19, 2000 fire at Seton Hall University. That fire, within a campus residence hall, claimed the lives of three students and injured 58 others. Four, including Llanos and Simons, suffered critical life threatening and life changing burns.

During the program, which has been presented at colleges, all across the country, Llanos and Simons will talk about their ordeal of being college burn victims. Their motive is to be advocates for fire safety and prevention so that no other students will have to endure the pain that they suffered. Also, they strive to be the voice of many burn victims across the country who may feel "trapped in their new skin."
