Both artist/photographers were tasked with the challenge of choosing twenty-five portraits from each others oeuvre. The selection process was made all the more interesting by the knowledge that Azad is presently working as a studio assistant to his older and internationally renowned mentor.
Taken together, the constellation of portrait-images presented by both artists remind us why the portrait in photographic practice has always been a complex and contemplative act. Over time it has become, the site of multiple interactions— aesthetic, cultural, ideological, sociological and psychological.
Whichever of these paradigms one accepts constitutes a scheme of understanding from which hierarchies of importance and value derive, posing a challenge to photographers forever renewable yet endlessly fascinating .
