In her exhibition, The Colored Bone China, Juana Valdes previews her new series of bone china works and current pieces that investigate the history of porcelain as a commodity. The Colored China Rags are sculptural works by Valdes which mimic the softness of the actual fabric, echo the “softness” and translucency of bone china (versus traditional porcelain), and all the while questioning scales of value and currency in the global socio-economic landscape. Other works in the show are the series of texts on bone china squares Hanging By a Thread, with variants stemming from the expression, “Hanging by a nail, by a thread, by the skin of your teeth”: each phrase describing a tense, precarious condition of the body or mind. This exhibition comprises her most current body of work, and new pieces done during her Research-Intensive Semester.
Opening reception Oct 3 from 5-7 p.m.
