Enduring Racism Speaker Series 2019 with Laura Valdiviezo
April 9, 2019
12:30 pm-1:45 pm
Associate Professor Laura Valdiviezo, director of the UMass Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies, will discuss language, status, stigma and the paradox of bilingualism at the Enduring Racism Speaker Series 2019.
Valdiviezo will address the main issues impacting the perception of bilingual and multilingual speakers in the context of education institutions. Based on her comparative work with educators who teach multilingual students in the United States and internationally, Valdiviezo will offer an analysis of language ideologies which contribute to stigmatizing bilingual speakers from underserved communities while rewarding those from privileged groups.
