The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. The evening’s concert will include Debussy: String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 among other selections.
In the second half, the musicians will draw upon the Chinese tradition, to present Dim Sum-short compilations by contemporary Chinese composers Zhou Long, Lei Liang and Chen Yi. The quartet explains their idea behind this delectable performance practice: “the standard three-work structure of most quartet recitals normally limits the performance of contemporary pieces to just one quartet. In our programming of contemporary Chinese-American work, we have decided to break open this portion of the concert and include shorter works by several composers. This enables our audiences to sample a broader range of living Chinese-American composers in a single concert, in the same way that the style of eating Chinese food called "dim sum" involves a wide variety of bite-sized delicacies.” Now in its third decade, the quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications.
