A recording of the linguistics department’s Freeman Lecture, presented Feb. 17 by Stanford University linguistics professor John Rickford, will be broadcast on New England Public Radio News Network as part of its “Speakers Forum.”

In his talk titled “Justice for Jeantel (and Trayvon): Fighting Dialect Prejudice in Courtrooms and Beyond,” Rickford delves into vernacular English to show how differences in language can lead to distrust and disregard between communities. Rickford concludes by offering solutions to help bridge linguistic gaps across cultures.
