September 19, 2019
The Net (Germany, 2003, 121 min., doc.)
This provocative documentary traces the influence of 20th-century developments including the internet, cybernetics and systems theory, multimedia art, new concepts in psychology and military research. It interweaves interviews with leading thinkers in these fields and letters between the director and Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, who is presented as an extreme case of how individual identity can disappear in global virtual worlds. Intro by Skyler Arndt-Briggs (DEFA Film Library, UMass Amherst)
