Amir El Saffar, trumpeter par excellence with a classical background has been described as “uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music” (the Wire). Together with his Two Rivers Ensemble he has made innovative strides in using the Iraqi maqam modal system to transform the American jazz idiom. The resultant sound is thrilling and distinct from other contemporary cross-cultural musical fusions. The ensemble made up of jazz and Middle Eastern musicians plays music that is deeply rooted in the musical forms of Iraq and nearby regions, yet speaks to the language of swing, improvisation and group interaction. Amir ElSaffer compositions have won him accolades from DownBeat magazine and standing ovations at the Newport Jazz Festival.
