Online Intensive English

We offer THREE levels of Intensive English:

• A2 (Elementary)
• B1 (Intermediate)
• B2 (Upper Intermediate)

How it works:

• Online Intensive —after you sign up for this course in SPIRE (see APPLY NOW link), you will be sent a placement exam. The level of the course materials and lessons will be at a different depending on your placement exam results.
• The course requires 15+ hours a week for 13 weeks.
• Upon completion of the course, we will provide you with an exit proficiency screening and certificate.
• Depending on your exit proficiency screening, you will be eligible to move up to the next level or take college-credit, advanced level English courses with us.

What can you expect in the class:

• Students will engage in a variety of tasks through daily lessons using a variety of online tools and platforms. The course is managed through Canvas.
• The curriculum we adopt is comprehensive and uses the latest technology, including AI tools, to help you learn and improve all modalities: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
• Instructors will provide timely feedback and arrange a live weekly meeting with students based on time zone and student availability.
• In addition, two live, one-on-one tutoring sessions per week are required.

Once you submit this, it will take the registrar's office a couple of days to process your enrollment form.

Step 2: 

A few days after you fill out the form in Step 1, you will receive a UMass Email address sent to the email you used to sign up for the class. You will need to create a password to access the payment platform and the course page in a Canvas (a course management platform). 

Step 3: 

Once your enrollment is official, you will be sent a placement exam to your UMass email address. You must be enrolled to take the placement exam.

Step 4:

View and pay your bill. Click on the heading Tuition, Fees, & Billing, Tuition & Fees for instructions. Bills are not available immediately and can take up to two weeks to generate.

Each semester costs $1,650.00

Registration Fee: $85.00

Billing, Payment, & Financial Aid

Once you enroll, it will take time to process your enrollment. Different offices at UMass handle different steps of the enrollment process. You will NOT receive a bill in the mail or in your email.

To see your bill, you will need to log into SPIRE (using the @umass email address that was assigned to you). Once you are in SPIRE, look for the box that says "Finances" and click it.  Bills are usually generated on the 15th of the month so do not worry if you do not see a bill yet. You can pay the bill in full OR set up payment plans (https://www.umass.edu/bursar/payment/upay) by following these instructions: 

1. Navigate to the Finances tile in SPIRE.          
2. Click on Sign up/Manage Payment Plan.
3. Select Payment Plan in the QuikPAY menu.

There is no financial aid available for non-credit classes.
