Online Intensive English

We offer two levels of Intensive English:

     Low Intermediate & Upper Intermediate

How it works:

• LLESL 26 Intensive Intermediate English—after you sign up for this course in SPIRE (see APPLY NOW link), you will be given a placement exam. The level of the course materials and lessons is at a different depending on your placement exam results. 
• The course requires 15+ hours a week for 13 weeks.
• Upon completion of the course, we will provide you with an exit proficiency screening and certificate stating your current English proficiency level based on the CEFR scale (A1–C2).
• Depending on your exit proficiency screening, you will be eligible to move up to Upper Intermediate course or to take college-credit, advanced level English courses with us.

What can you expect in the class:

• Students will engage in a variety of tasks through daily lessons, both in their own time and in real time.
• The curriculum we adopt is comprehensive and uses the latest technology, including AI tools, to help you learn and improve all modalities: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
• Instructors will provide timely feedback and arrange live interaction opportunities with students based on time zone and student availability. 
• In addition, live, one-on-one tutoring is available throughout your time enrolled in a course with us.

Once you submit this, it will take the registrar's office a day to process.

Step 3:

Once you enroll in the course, you need to email Andrea Dallas (adallas@umass.edu) with your enrollment, and she will verify enrollment and send you the placement exam. You must be enrolled to take the placement exam.

Tuition 

Each semester costs $1,650.

Payment & Financial Aid

There is no financial aid available for short-term certificates at the university if you are not enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. However, UMass Amherst offers a payment plan (monthly installments) for courses and short-term programs: https://www.umass.edu/bursar/upay-payment-plan.
