Jolene Costa holds a B.A in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of New South Wales, and an M.A in Applied Linguistics from the Nanyang Technological University. 

Prior to joining UMass Amherst, Jolene taught at the Centre for English Language Communication in the National University of Singapore. She specialized in teaching academic writing courses and has also taught communication courses for engineers. She has served as a faculty consultant at the University of Pittsburgh Writing Center and as adjunct faculty teaching English for Professional Communication. She has also taught and managed professional business English programs at Kaplan Higher Education Academy, with a focus on English as a second language students. Her research interests include collaborative and problem based learning, assessment for learning, and reflective practices.
