Understand Your Choices

While we encourage you to report incidents or concerns directly to the Title IX CoordinatorDeputy Title IX Coordinators, or the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, all of which are non-confidential, there are a number of other offices and organizations which do offer confidential support. The information below will help you understand distinctions between different types of people and offices you may choose to speak to about a concern and whether or not they can keep your information confidential or are required to share it with the Title IX Coordinator.

Confidential vs. Non-Confidential Offices

If you speak to an employee of a confidential office, no information will be shared with the Title IX coordinator without your written consent. If you speak with an employee of a non-confidential office, they will respectfully keep anything you discuss private, but are obligated to share the report with the Title IX coordinator.

Some employees are required to report incidents to the University.

If you choose to tell a UMass employee, it is important to know that the information shared may not be kept confidential.  This is because some UMass employees are considered "Responsible Employees" by law and University policy which means they cannot keep Title IX information confidential and are legally required to report incidents to the Title IX Coordinator.
