DesignBuild #4

Design-Build Program

UMass DesignBuild (UMDB) brings together students from the UMass Building and Construction Technology Program and the UMass Department of Architecture to design and build innovative, small-scale, affordable housing for under-served communities in Western Massachusetts.

Our mission is to provide transformational educational experiences that empower our students to become ethical leaders in their chosen professions.

As energy codes in Massachusetts continue to become more stringent, UMDB projects continue to improve on energy efficiency while also reducing embodied carbon through the incorporation of alternative sustainable materials including wood fiber insulation, locally-sourced wood products, and compressed straw-bale wall assemblies.

Internships

Our students pursue summer or winter internships in their respective programs. Those are important components of their education because they provide hands-on experience and help build practical skills needed to address real-world environmental challenges. Internships also offer valuable networking opportunities and insight into potential career paths in the field. Depending on curricular requirements, internships can be credited, but that is not always necessary.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Students in NRC and ENVISCI have the opportunity to find research experiences in our various labs while pursuing their undergraduate degree. Some research opportunities are paid positions and students can earn valuable credit as they are conducting resume-building research.
