This page lists all of the certificate programs that are currently available in Environmental Conservation or through our faculty. Some of these even provide pathways to our graduate programs.
Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Certificate (Online)
Starting in Fall 2021, the arboriculture program will offer a new 15-credit certificate, delivered fully online, through University Without Walls (UWW). The online Certificate in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry is a gateway for students eager for an introduction to the arboriculture and urban forestry fields. The certificate can be added to any UMass degree and has a flexible course sequence, allowing students to begin in any fall, spring, or summer semester. The certificate program also provides continuing education for career professionals. To accommodate varied work schedules, the course sequence is flexible, allowing students to begin in any fall, spring, or summer semester. ISA certified arborists are eligible to earn continuing education credits in several of the courses offered in the certificate program.
Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) Certificate
The undergraduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science and Technology provides students with a background in the science, techniques, and application of geographical methods and techniques, enabling them to embark on public and private sector careers or to undertake further studies in geography and other fields. Through exposure to spatial analysis, remote sensing technologies, cartography, and other methods of interfacing with spatial data, students will gain knowledge, skills, and practices beneficial to whatever undergraduate degree they’re pursuing.
Offshore Wind Professional Certificate
The Department of Environmental Conservation, in association with the Clean Energy Extension, offers a graduate-level professional certificate in offshore wind to professionals and graduate students seeking to up-skill and broaden their knowledge to address the needs of the offshore wind industry. This certificate covers the broad range of disciplines involved in this industry, including technology and engineering, development and finance, environmental impact and stakeholder engagement, supply chain management and business logistics, law, and policy. The certificate provides 9 credits of coursework and is designed to be completed in one year and through online courses.
Sustainable Building Construction Graduate Certificate (Online Option)
The BCT program offers a graduate certificate in sustainable building construction to professionals seeking an opportunity to pursue in-depth studies in sustainability in building design and construction without needing to complete a full degree program. This certificate’s topics include sustainable (green) building systems and materials, energy and conservation, building technologies, and construction management. Fifteen (15) credits of coursework can be completed through online or in-person courses, with in-person courses offered in Amherst, Newton (on our Mount Ida campus), or both.
