The Department of English supports the Black Lives Matter movement as we stand united against police violence and anti-black racism. We grieve the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black lives. In our teachings, we are committed to encouraging awareness of, and reflection on, the causes, nature, and effects of white supremacy. Issues around race and racism, slavery and its aftermath, and imperialism and its effects are part of the very substance of our discipline, reflected in the literature and writing we analyze, the scholarship we produce, and the teaching we undertake. Yet we also acknowledge that textual analysis and scholarship cannot be enough, that change must be real and substantial. In our stand with the calls for change both on campus and beyond, we will redouble our commitment against racism in all its forms going forward.
