Stacie Klinowski and Jackie Ordway, first-year graduate students in the English Department's Composition and Rhetoric program, have been awarded the Moran-Herrington Fellowship for 2018. As recipients of this financial award, they receive a course release from teaching during their first year of graduate study, giving them more time to focus on their research.
The Moran-Herrington Fellowship was first endowed in 2006 with a gift from Charlie and Kay Moran. Since then, the fund has continued to grow, thanks to generous contributions from Anne Herrington and Tina Plette, as well as many former students and alumni.
The purpose of the fellowship is to help recruit the best Ph.D. candidates in Composition and Rhetoric, particularly those whose "pursuit of further study in the field springs from an interest in classroom teaching." Both recipients expressed their appreciation for the award. Ordway observed that "this fellowship illustrates how much my contributions as both a student and a teacher are valued" here at UMass. Klinowski noted that she is "thankful to have the time to develop her own research interests and projects" as she begins her graduate coursework.
Ordway's research interests include writing center pedagogy and writing in digital spaces. Klinowski's research interests include writing center studies, disability studies, and rhetorics of student activism; she will present her research at the International Writing Center Association Conference this coming October.
