Rebecca Lorimer Leonard has published her cowritten article, "Finding Complexity in Language Identity Surveys" in the Journal of Language, Identity & Education. Co-written with Shanti Bruce of Nova Southeastern University and former UMass Amherst colleague Deirdre Vinyard of University of Washington Bothell, the article reports on a cross-institutional study designed to better understand the language identities of first year writers at three universities. The article argues that while language identity surveys offer insight into student writers' language backgrounds, such surveys also reify and constrain students' complex language identities in the act of labeling them.
