The English Department’s Juniper Initiative for Literary Arts and Action receives $10,700 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) to support exceptional literary arts programming in Western MA. The award is part of MCC’s commitment “to advance the Power of Culture across the Commonwealth” according to the award notice. Through support for the Juniper Initiative, MCC funding acknowledges the value and impact of the renowned Visiting Writers Series and annual Literary Arts Festival, as well as the Juniper Summer Writing Institute and Institute for Young Writers.

Established in 2004, the Juniper Initiative’s programming emphasizes contemporary poetry, prose, and translation, positioning it among the top producers of innovative literary practices in the region. The Initiative also champions the literary arts as a form of both community engagement and civic participation.

For over two decades, the Juniper Initiative’s free and fee-based programming have attracted thousands of people to Amherst for readings, literary festivals, and summer writing programs. The Initiative fosters a welcoming space where the public congregates for literary community, dialogue, and collaboration. The literary arts programming serves as an anchor providing accessible gathering places that strengthen social bonds and community identity. Beyond the community-building efforts, there has also been an economic boost to local business and institutions as attendees dine in restaurants, purchase books from independent booksellers, and visit area museums.

The Mass Cultural Council funds reach every community in the Commonwealth. Its mission is to promote excellence, education, access and diversity in the arts, humanities and sciences, to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and contribute to the vitality of our communities and economy. The Juniper Initiative is honored to be among the grantees supporting literary arts in Western Massachusetts in 2026 and beyond.
