Florianne “Bo” Jimenez, PhD Candidate in the Composition and Rhetoric program, was recently awarded a Dissertation Fieldwork Grant by the UMass Graduate School. She will be using the financial support to spend a few weeks in Manila doing archival research for her dissertation.

Jimenez's dissertation aims to understand the links between colonization and writing by analyzing student writing from the Philippines at the turn of the 20^th century, when the U.S. took control of the Philippines from Spain. The archival research in Manila at the American Historical Collection will provide historical and sociopolitical context, specifically on student and teacher experiences in the colonial school.
