The English Department hires a limited number of Digital Communication Interns (DCIs) for the academic year. Keep an eye out for email announcements from the English Undergrad Advising Office for information about how to apply.
Interns create original content for the English Department's website, newsletter, and social media pages. Applicants may request to specialize in one or more of the following areas: writing, editing, photography, or usability testing.
Required skills:
• Strong writing and proofreading skills
• Self-motivated, organized, meets deadlines
• Sufficiently flexible schedule to meet with faculty sponsor, conduct interviews, attend events
Desirable:
• Photography skills, access to DSLR camera
• Social media skills
• Coursework or interest in web usability and/or UX
• Familiar with the English Department's mission and values

Current Digital Communications Intern
Katy Schlaefer is a senior English major, specializing in digital humanities and environmental humanities. Katy is interested in working as a web designer. Her hobbies include reading, writing, cross-stitching, and paddleboarding.
Sarah Mulcahy is a junior Legal Studies and English double major from Massachusetts and is currently working towards specializations in Social Justice and Environmental Humanities. She's interested in studying law and enjoys both creative and professional writing. She writes newsletters for local small businesses and is looking forward to creating content for the English Department, and her favorite thing in the world is dogs.
Victoria Borque is an English major with minors in History and Italian Studies, pursuing certificates in Professional Writing and Technical Communication and Medieval Studies.
Cayli Armstrong is a senior Communication major interested in digital media and writing. She will be graduating this spring with a letter of specialization in New Media and Digital Humanities, as well as a certificate in Media Literacy. Her interests include writing, hiking, and dogs! Cayli says, "This will be my second year working as a Peer Advisor for the Department of Communication and my first as a Digital Communications Intern for the Department of English. I am super excited to be working with two amazing communities this year."
Ryan Comeau is a senior English and Political Science double major with a minor in history and a specialization in New Media and Digital Humanities. He is also on the Executive Board of the Humanities and Fine Arts Student Leadership Board and the leader of the HFA Student Showcase. He is interested in writing and editing, and is an avid fan of YouTube.
Grace Dugan is a senior English major pursuing a specialization in the Study and Practice of Writing and a certificate in Professional Writing and Technical Communication. She is involved with a variety of communities on campus including the Writing Center, ResLife, The Western Massachusetts Writing Project, and The Humanities and Fine Arts Advising and Career Center. She is passionate about non-profits, Pablo Neruda, and Taco Bell.
Sierra Sumner is a senior English and Legal Studies major, specializing in the Study and Practice of Writing. She is a writer from from Massachusetts, California and Hawaii.
Rhane Mazzola is junior English major who is interested in digital media and technical writing. She will be graduating in May 2020 with certificates in Professional Writing and Technical Communication and New Media and Digital Humanities. She is interested in potentially writing for video games and enjoys creative writing.
Ben Dussault is a senior communication major with a minor in English and a certificate in film studies. He is heavily involved on campus as a Resident Assistant, a photographer for the Hampden Gallery, and as a Production Specialist for @umassupc. His interests include film, music, and Chipotle.
Alvin Buyinza is a psychology and journalism major with a minor in English. He is also a writer for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian and a independent photographer. His hobbies include photography, reading and taking long walks.
Nicole Valliant is a senior English major, specializing in Teaching the English Language Arts (TELA). She is also pursuing minors in Psychology and Education. Nicole is interested in teaching English at a secondary level. Her hobbies include skiing, reading, and painting.
Julia Dickman is a senior in UMass’s Commonwealth Honors College. She is working toward a BA in Communication and a Letter of Specialization in the Study and Practice of Writing. She enjoys art, reading, and writing, and is always on the lookout for projects that combine all three.
