About American Studies
The Letter of Specialization in American Studies enables students to shape a concentrated interdisciplinary course of study around unresolved social and intellectual issues in American Culture—for example, questions of race, class, gender, and ethnicity.
Requirements (5 courses)
Students earn a Letter of Specialization by completing the following program of coursework:
Students must complete a minimum of five courses with a minimum grade of 'C'. Students may take only two courses at the 200-level (not including English 279); all others must be at the 300-level or above.
- English 279, Introduction to American Studies (required)
- 1 or 2 courses in American literature at the 300 or 400 level, taken within the English Department
- 2 or 3 courses in American culture from at least two departments other than English
