Janell Tryon
PhD in Literature
Janell Tryon is a doctoral candidate in the English Department with a concentration in American Studies. She received her MPH from UC Berkeley and led public health research initiatives for the Departments of Public Health in San Francisco and New York. Her dissertation project historicizes sanitation’s role in residential displacement, surveillance, and extraction, under the guise of revitalizing New York City’s public space. Her research is guided by spatial and Black Marxism, discard studies, Native studies, queer theory, and anti-colonial eco-criticism. Her interdisciplinary scholarship has been published in American Journal of Public Health, AIDS and Behavior, AIDS Care, and is forthcoming in American Quarterly.
