Anne Herrington
Distinguished Professor Emerita
Bio
Anne Herrington is Distinguished Professor of English Emerita. She was a member of the faculty from 1986 to 2013, serving as Chair of the English Department, Director of the Writing Program, and Site Director of the Western Massachusetts Writing Project (a National Writing Project site).
Throughout her career, she has been involved in developing and leading writing-across-the-curriculum programs and conducting research on writing, teaching, and learning across disciplines. In addition to numerous article-length studies on writing and learning across the curriculum, she has published two edited collections with Charles Moran: Writing, Teaching, and Learning in the Disciplines (MLA, 1992) and Genre across the Curriculum (Utah State UP, 2005). With Marcia Curtis, she co-authored, Persons in Process: Four Stories of Writing and Personal Development in College (2000), a longitudinal study of four students’ writing experiences in their college courses. For that study, they received the National Council of Teachers of English’s David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English (2002).
She has also published work on assessment, including a co-edited collection with Charles Moran and Kevin Hodgson: Teaching the New Writing: Technology, Change, and Assessment (Teachers College, 2009) and articles with Charles Moran on their studies of automated programs for assessing writing.
Most recently, as a post-retirement Faculty Fellow in the Office of Academic Planning and Assessment at UMass, she has been involved in developing and conducting research on an upper-level integrative experience course as part of the General Education Program at UMass Amherst. The role of writing in those courses is the focus of “Intersections of Writing, Reflection, and Integration,” Across the Disciplines (2016), co-authored with Martha Stassen. They have also written on the adaptation of the AAC&U VALUE Assessment process at UMass Amherst in “Making the VALUE Initiative Work for Us,” Peer Review (Fall 2018).
