James Goodale

James Goodale is the former vice chairman and general counsel of the New York Times. He led the fight to defend the Times in the Pentagon Papers case. A recognized First Amendment expert, he has taught at Yale, NYU, and Fordham law schools. He has been a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, and host/producer of the TV show “Digital Age” for public television. He has written over 200 articles for many publications, including the New York TimesHarper’sThe Daily Beast, and The Columbia Journalism Review. A frequent guest on cable and network TV, he is also the author of Fighting for the Press: the Inside Story of the Pentagon Papers and Other Battles, twice named as best non-fiction book of the year.
