Prior Approval for Protocol Submissions and Permits

Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) & Protocol Submission

The UMass Amherst IBC follows NIH guidelines for reviewing projects that require constructing and handling:

  • rDNA and synthetic nucleic acid molecules
  • Organisms and viruses containing rDNA and synthetic nucleic acid molecules.

In addition, the IBC reviews activities involving use of select agents and toxins and other biohazardous agents that must be handled at BSL-3 containment. The IBC also reviews activities involving BSL-2 containment, which includes use of human source materials. Protocols for covered work must be submitted through Kuali for institutional review.
