Prior Approval & Permits
Permit to User Radioactive Materials
- All prospective radiation users must complete the Radiation Permit Application; this includes both new and current PIs. Return the application to the EHS Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), [email protected]. Note that annual renewals are conducted through SciShield once you are an established user.
- The RSO will schedule a meeting with you to review you intended use and facilities and refer the application for use to the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) for review and institutional approval.
- Note that devices containing radioactive sources, sealed sources, and all uses of radioactive isotopes are not permitted without a valid permit.
- You will not be able to purchase radioactive materials until your lab has been approved. All shipment of radioactive materials must be processed through CEMS. Complete the form in SciShield to notify the RSO of the shipment.
Registration of Laser & X-Ray Equipment
Notify EHS of any purchases or acquisitions of lasers or x-ray generating equipment.
- Class 3B and 4 lasers must be registered in SciSchield and receive approval from EHS prior to the start of work.
- All radiation-generating devices, such as x-ray machines must also be registered in advance.
