Narcan & Fentanyl
Students, faculty & staff can swipe their UCard at the Harm Reduction vending machine located just outside of the

PHPC’s offices in room 101 in the Campus Center to receive free Narcan, fentanyl test strips, condoms & masks. Fentanyl test strips are a harm reduction tool used to test drugs for the presence of fentanyl. Fentanyl has been found in cocaine, other party drugs & heroin across the Commonwealth. A positive result means the drug contains the potent opioid fentanyl, the leading cause of opioid overdose related deaths in the US today. For a brief training on the use of Narcan and fentanyl test strips stop by any PHPC sponsored clinic and speak with our staff.
Naloxone (brand-name Narcan) is a lifesaving medication used to reverse opioid overdoses that has been used safely by EMS in the US for the past 40 years. The opioid epidemic touches us all. We believe at UMass that carrying Narcan is an act of love and that access to this medication should be simple and free. PHPC, in collaboration with UMass Recovery is proud to offer Narcan to our campus and surrounding communities. Our team of passionate student Harm Reduction Ambassadors provide free overdose education training to RSOs, clubs, teams & departments upon request.
Tobacco & Vaping
Tobacco-Free UMass Amherst
UMass Amherst has a tobacco-free policy to encourage and support a healthier environment among all members of the campus community. The Amherst campus joins over 1,500 colleges and universities nationwide in being a smoke- or tobacco-free campus.

For the purpose of this policy, “tobacco” refers to any and all tobacco products, whether inhaled or ingested, as well as electronic cigarettes. The use of tobacco products is prohibited everywhere on campus, inside buildings and throughout the grounds. This policy applies to everyone and anyone on campus, including students, staff, faculty, contractors, and visitors.
- The use of tobacco is prohibited in all buildings and vehicles owned or leased by UMass Amherst, regardless of location.
- The use of tobacco is also prohibited on all university grounds and in any outdoor area controlled by the university. This includes all university land, parking lots and parking ramps, athletic fields, tennis courts, and recreational areas.
- The use of tobacco is prohibited inside any vehicle located on university grounds.
- When any person enters the grounds of the university, any smoking material shall be extinguished and disposed of in an appropriate receptacle at the perimeter of the grounds of the university.
This policy does not apply to tobacco used in the practice of traditional, spiritual, religious, or cultural activities (e.g., by Native Americans). To ensure that such tobacco use, if it involves burning indoors, does not inadvertently activate fire alarms or sprinkler systems or pose threats to public health or safety, prior approval for indoor burning is required from the campus office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to allow for advanced preparations and accommodations.
Exceptions for research purposes require the approval of the Provost or designee. Requests for any other exceptions as may be required by law should be submitted to the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance.
Our Commitment
Tobacco-Free UMass is committed to:
- Supporting the UMass Amherst tobacco-free campus initiative
- Promoting an environment free of tobacco influence
- Preventing tobacco initiation and use
- Providing aid to all campus community members in cessation
- Promoting voluntary compliance on campus
