Environmental & Public Health

EHS is the public health authority for UMass Amherst. This responsibility includes inspecting ice rinks air quality, swimming pool conditions and water quality, and Recreational Camps for Children for compliance. We investigate public health nuisance complaints and conduct inspections, upon request, in housing units, in accordance with the Sanitary Code. We evaluate pest problems (bedbugs, cockroaches, mice) in conjunction with Physical Plant partners and follow up with issues surrounding any potential animal - rabies exposure and compliance with Department of Public Health standards. There is liaison with the municipality on drinking water issues including providing recommendations, alerts and notifications when necessary. We are a technical advisor to the University on public health issues. There is liaison to municipal to State Department of Public Health and to State Department of Environmental Protection partners.
