Water Quality

UMass Amherst prioritizes the safety and quality of our water supply, which comes from the Town of Amherst water
system. For information on responsible water practices on campus, as well as details about our water source and guidelines for maintaining water quality, refer to the information below on drinking water, reclaimed water, sewer water, and storm water.
Please visit the UMass Sustainability website for more details on water conservation and preservation on campus and the UMass prevention plan for saving water.
Building Materials
Hazardous building materials are elements used when building that contain harmful elements. Common hazardous building materials are asbestos, lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). To manage them throughout campus, there is a survey that needs to be completed to ensure the safety of everyone.
The Hazardous Building Material Assessment for Demolition, Renovation and Maintenance Project needs to be completed. Prior to conducting renovations, demolitions or maintenance on a University of Massachusetts building/facility, a HAZMAT survey must be conducted. Results of the survey must be filed with the Project manager (UMASS, DCAM, UMBA), EHS, and contractors performing the work.
Any lab equipment offered for disposal may contain a variety of materials that could be hazardous to people and the environment. In recognition of this potential to cause harm, the Lab Equipment Disposal for labs makes every attempt to minimize as much as possible the impact of improper disposal of hazardous materials. Please be sure to follow this process when requesting equipment disposal.
UMass Hazardous Material Management Plan
The University of Massachusetts has a Hazardous Material Management Plan filed and approved by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for all hazardous containing materials. EHS oversees and manages the Hazardous Material Management Plan which involves:
- An All-Hazard Review is conducted on any building materials to be impacted for maintenance, renovation, construction or activities that disturb the material. The review identifies the asbestos materials to be handled according to all Federal and State regulations.
- Removal of any damaged or potentially damaged hazardous materials through licensed professionals.
- All personnel involved with hazardous containing materials at The University of Massachusetts are licensed through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as hazardous material workers, supervisors, inspectors, and project monitors.
- Hazardous material abatement is conducted by a licensed Abatement Contractor. A third-party Environmental Consultant is hired to perform project oversite and final visual and air testing.
- Providing Hazardous Material Awareness Training, so that staff may recognize hazardous containing materials, and contact EHS if needed.
