Friday, September 23 - Saturday, September 24, 2022

The Social Justice Education (SJE) program at UMass Amherst is thrilled to invite you to our 30th anniversary celebration to be held Friday, September 23 through Saturday, September 24, 2022. We will bring together students, faculty, alums, and other beloved friends and community members to take part in a variety of programming and other festivities. Our goal is to provide a meaningful and much-needed opportunity to learn in community with one another--across generations, social identities, and professional and activist roles. We hope that this will be an opportunity and space for attendees to explore healing and self care, talk about current events, exchange expertise, gifts and talents, and invest in both new and existing connections across and within generations.

An overview of the event is provided below. The anniversary planning committee will continue to update this page as more information is finalized. Please contact sje-reunion22@umass.edu with any questions. We hope to see you in September!

Honoring Professor Emerita Maurianne (Schifreen) Adams

On Friday afternoon we will honor Professor Emerita Maurianne Adams’ legacy and many contributions to SJE, the College of Education, UMass Amherst, and surrounding communities. Professor Adams was a co-founder of the College’s Social Justice Education concentration along with Professor and Dean Emerita Bailey Jackson, Professor Pat Griffin, and Professor Barbara J. Love.

Professor Adams first taught at Smith College before working at UMass Amherst for over 50 years. Before joining the faculty of the College of Education, she was actively involved in undergraduate education as Coordinator of Academic Affairs for Project 10, Director for Social Issues and Instructional Development for Residential Academic Programs for the College of Education.

She was a prolific scholar who authored or co-authored more than eight books and 50 journal articles and book chapters including Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice (4th Edition) and Readings for Diversity and Social Justice (5th Edition). She also served as editor of the College of Education’s academic journal Equity & Excellence in Education for twelve years. Professor Adams was a thought leader and steady force within social justice education and the campus  community at large. Her legacy continues to influence and inspire students, alumni, and junior and senior colleagues in the field. Professor Adams died on October 6, 2020. Read more about her life and legacy.

Event Safety, Note on Covid

As we approach the 30th Anniversary Celebration, we are excited to welcome everyone to UMass Amherst. The year 2022 marks the 3rd year in which COVID-19 is a reality. Your commitment to best public health practices will help ensure a successful and healthy 2-day experience, as guests are attending from all over the country.

The university has been consistent in their approach throughout the pandemic. The university’s policies and protocols are based on federal CDC and Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidance. Below are the key aspects for the Anniversary Celebration:

  • We encourage you to get tested pre-arrival
  • Masking and Antigen (at-home) tests
    • Masks are strongly encouraged during the anniversary celebration, particularly in crowded indoor settings, to help care for and protect individuals who are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
    • Free KN95 masks and antigen (at-home) tests are available in vending machines located on the lower level of the Campus Center. A limited supply will be available at the SJE check in desk as well.

We thank everyone for their continuing support to keep everyone safe as we embark upon a time of community and healing.
