Frequently Asked Questions EdNet's Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the purpose of EdNet@UMass?

The mission of EdNet is to provide a forum for the discussion of educational uses of the Internet and issues surrounding educational uses of computers.

This is taken to mean that EdNetters will be discussing issues about 'education' itself, educational issues that face us today, as well as how educators might use the Internet.

Q. How can I get help from an EdNet Manager?

That's easy. Send e-mail to:

ednetmgr@educ.umass.edu

If you have a problem, please try be as specific as you can when you tell me what's wrong. Don't worry if you're not. I'll ask questions if I need to.

Note: In many cases the answer to your question is to be found in this FAQ. But I'd be glad to hear from you anyway.

Q. How can I subscribe to EdNet@UMass?

Send an email message to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

On the first line of the body of the message, flush against the left margin type this:

Subscribe Ednet (Your Name)

No "Subject:", memohead, date, nothing else. If your mailer requires something in the "Subject:" field, just insert a single letter.

Q. There are THREE addresses for EdNet. What is the purpose of each address?

listproc@lists.umass.edu

ednet@lists.umass.edu

ednetmgr@educ.umass.edu

Q. I have not seen any EdNet traffic in several days, have I been 'unsubscribed' from EdNet?

The chances are high that the CREN Listprocessor has automatically unsubscribed your account. IF this is the reason for you not receiving EdNet, you just need to 'subscribe' to EdNet again.

Here's how to do that. Just send email to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

And on the first line of your message right up against the left most margin type this:

Subscribe EdNet (Your Real Name - no parenthesis)

No "Subject:", memohead, date, nothing else. If your mailer requires something in the "Subject:" field, just insert a single letter.

Note: If your account has been automatically unsubscribed this means that one of the three things has likely happened:

1. over a period of your site has been unreachable when EdNet has attempted to deliver postings to you.
2. a site along the transit path between EdNet (UMass) and your site was down/unreachable.
3. your mailbox was 'over quota' and your site would not allow you to receive anymore mail.

In all these cases the postings addressed to you will be returned to EdNet's Listprocessor. The Listprocessor, in many cases, will assume that too much traffic is being returned and 'unsubscribe' your account.

Q. How do I get off this @%&?! list?

Send email to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

On the first line of your message right up against the left most margin type:

Unsubscribe EdNet

No Subject, No name. If your mailer requires something in the "Subject: " field, then just put a single letter or nonsense syllable.

Q. I want to reply to a person who just posted a message. I do not want to quote more than is necessary or not enough. How much quoting should I do, should I just quote the entire message?

The answer to this question lies in understanding the 'purpose of quoting' in this medium.

It's much easier to 'stay tuned' to the train of thought if the quoted material is brief and directly to the point (and in very close proximity to your thoughts on them).

Rarely is there a need to:

There is almost never a reason to quote:

I've offered these as suggestions to you. Please take them in that regard. EdNet is here to discuss 'education' and learn about what other folks are doing in 'education'. EdNet is also a place to learn about the Internet. Hopefully we can help folks do become better, more well informed educators and citizens of the Net.

Q. EdNet is 'moderated', what does that mean?

In network terminology 'moderated' means that someone here at EdNet will route messages as they come in. Originally EdNet was 'unmoderated' (all messages automatically went to the entire list). The problem with being unmoderated was that messages of a management nature (how do I subscribe, how do I unsubscribe, how do I xxxx, help me with, etc.) were all going to the entire list.

So, EdNet was reconfigured to be 'moderated'. This way we could send List appropriate messages to the entire list, and send management problems to the manager.

Q. I'm going away for a week--I don't want to 'unsubscribe' but I also don't want traffic to pile up in my mailbox - what can I do?

Note: When you set your account to 'postpone' the messages to EdNet during this time are not on-hold for you to pick up later. Postpone kills the flow to your account (until you 'ack' - see below).

To set your EdNet account to 'postpone':

I suggest that the easiest method to suspend your flow of EdNet traffic, is to 'unsubscribe' and then 'subscribe' when you return.

Send email to: listproc@lists.umass.edu

Type this in the first line of the body of your message right up against the left most margin:

Set EdNet Mail Postpone

Q. I'm back from my week long vacation and I want to begin to receive EdNet again. How do I change my subscription from 'postpone' to what it was?

If you have set your EdNet to 'postpone' and you wish to have us send EdNet to you once again, send email again to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

And on the first line of the body of your message right up against the left most margin type this:

Set EdNet Mail Ack

Sounds odd, but trust me.

Again, nothing in the "Subject: " field unless your mailer requires it, then just use a single letter or nonsense word.

Q. I have a small mailbox, can I set my account differently so that EdNet takes up less space?

Setting your account to 'digest' causes your EdNet traffic to arrive once a day in your mailbox in an abbreviated form. You do not loose the content of the postings, you just have shorter message headers (that routing junk at that takes up the top 10-20 lines of each message).

To set your account to 'digest:

Send email to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

In the first line of the body of your message right up against the left most margin type this:

Set EdNet Mail Digest

EdNet Home | FrontierLand | Guestorium | Where the Action Is | EdNet News | K-12 Links

Q. I don't like 'digest' how can I set my account back the way it was?

If you wish to restore the EdNet flow of traffic to you back to normal then send a message to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

In the first line of the body of your message right up against the left most margin type this:

Set EdNet Mail Ack

Again, no subject, memohead, date, name, etc.

Q. Is there a way to get 'automatic' help from EdNet?

Yes there is. To get automatic help with the automatic commands available send email to:

listproc@lists.umass.edu

Type this on the first line in the body of the message right up against the left most margin:

Help
