Professor Friedman's research interest include the economic history of 19th and 20th century United States,New World slavery in 19th and 20th century France, labor history of Europe and North America, labor economics, political economy, and the economics of health care.

Professor Heim is currently researching urban growth, property development, and land-use policy in U.S. metropolitan areas; municipal fiscal policy.
