Fundraising

The UMass Japanese Program has launched a new fundraising campaign to support students seeking career-building experiences in Japan. Many of our students aspire to become bridges between the United States and Japan, and gaining professional experience abroad is essential for developing the cultural and linguistic skills needed for future careers in international fields. At the same time, Japan faces an increasing need for globally minded workers who can help mediate between local communities and international visitors—roles our students are eager to fill.

To make these opportunities more accessible, the program established the Career Support Grant in 2023. This grant helps offset major expenses such as airfare and housing for students who participate in summer internships across Japan. The support has already made a meaningful difference for students who might otherwise be unable to pursue overseas work experiences.

Building on this momentum, the Japanese Program is planning a new summer course in 2025 that combines Business Japanese with real-world job experience in the beautiful town of Yamanouchi, Nagano. Students will be able to use the Career Support Grant toward this course or toward any internship they secure independently.

The program invites alumni, families, and community supporters to contribute to this initiative. Every donation directly helps students gain the international experience they need to become globally engaged professionals and future leaders connecting the U.S. and Japan.

We sincerely appreciate your support.
