2025 UMass Korean Calligraphy Showcase: Exploring the Beauty of Letters and Meaning

This showcase honors the beauty of Hangeul and promotes the art of exquisite handwriting. It offers a unique platform for participants to display their talent and creativity in calligraphy.

  • 4:30-5:30: Exhibition & Audience Voting
  • 5:30-6:00: Participant Sharing
  • 6:00-6:30: Refreshments
Eligibility

Open to students, faculty, and staff members from all Five Colleges campuses who are passionate about Hangeul and the Korean language.

Participation Rules

The Korean Calligraphy Showcase Theme is: "My Favorite Korean Quote"

Select a quote from K-pop lyrics, K-drama/movie lines, poetry, novels, or textbooks.

  • Participants may choose their own quotes.
     
  • All entries must be handwritten by the contestant. Submissions created using computer programs, apps, design tools, or ghostwriting will be disqualified.
     
  • Participants must attend the event and are required to give a 3–5 minute speech about the origin of their selected text, their reason for choosing it, and any additional insights.
     
  • Those who have taken Korean course(s) are encouraged to present in both Korean and English.
Submission Guidelines

Paper size: Letter (8.5” x 11”)

Ink: Any color may be used.

Tool: Any type of pen or brush is allowed.

Submission Method:

  • Submit your original handwritten work at the drop off location.
  • Include a separate sheet with your name, affiliation, a brief description of the source of your text and the reason for your choice, in Korean and/or English.
  • Drop off Location: Mailbox at Herter Hall 530

Deadline: Friday, February 21, by noon.

Evaluation Criteria

Creativity - originality and artistic expression

Technique - penmanship, style, and composition

Showcase Engagement - clarity and depth of sharing
