Our faculty teach a variety of courses covering topics like literature, linguistics, history, film, religion, women’s studies, theater, diplomacy, and gay/queer studies. Through these courses, you'll learn how to think and write critically, how to present and discuss Asia intelligibly to others, and how to apply what you've learned through studying Chinese language and culture at UMass Amherst to a career beyond graduation.
Graduate Studies in Chinese
East Asian Languages and Cultures is a unit within the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at UMass Amherst. We offer a course of study leading to the Master of Arts degree in Chinese.
Our program has two principal foci. One is the study of Chinese literature, culture, linguistics, and/or pedagogy. The second is the acquisition of practical language skills to enhance future work in such fields as translation, interpretation, teaching, journalism, business, or government.
Our MA students have gone on to work in foreign services, in government, as high school teachers and college professors, as professional translators and interpreters, and in many other careers.
