Study Abroad
The East Asian Languages and Cultures Program strongly encourages all of its students to take advantage of the great opportunities for study abroad offered through the Education Abroad section of the University's International Programs Office. Qualified UMass students can pursue language and cultural immersion by studying at partner universities in Japan, the People's Republic of China, and South Korea. For majors and minors in Japanese and Chinese we recommend aiming for the semester- or year-long programs, but there are also summer options (you can take a combination of academic year and summer programs, too). UMass currently has exchange agreements with the following universities:
Japan

- Sophia (Jōchi) University in Tokyo
- International Christian University in Tokyo
- Nanzan University in Nagoya
- Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata
- Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya
Hong Kong
- Chinese University of Hong Kong
- Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
South Korea
- Yonsei University in Seoul
UMass students may also choose to study abroad at a variety of other partner programs in Japan, People’s Republic of China, or Taiwan.

*Students planning to study in Japan should also aim to take Japanese 197M: Study Abroad Japan, a 1-credit course offered every fall by Professor Forrest.
IPO also offers area-specific information sessions in October/November each year for students who are thinking about study abroad and would like to know more. These information sessions are attended by departmental faculty and students who have already participated in the programs, as well as Education Abroad professional and student staff. These sessions are open to everyone: all aspects of the study abroad experience are discussed and refreshments are provided!
