She was awarded a Japanese government scholarship for Japanese Language and Culture studies and later a graduate scholarship. She received a graduate degree from the University of Library and Information Studies and a master’s in library and information science from the University of Alberta.

Sharon has worked in academic libraries at the University of Oregon, Ohio State University, Miyazaki International College, and at UMass Amherst since 1996 as the East Asian Studies Librarian. Her responsibilities include collection development, cataloging, reference, and instruction. Her passion is connecting people to the materials they need.

Sharon's research is a balance of personal interest (the history and aesthetics of Japanese toilets, banned books and librarians), professional interests (culture and ethics through picture books, Japanese monsters) and supporting second language learners through reading collections.
