SES exists to provide a kind of support the university cannot generate any other way: the connective tissue that recruits the highest caliber students and faculty to our community, and gives them the room to do work that matters.

That support has direct impact. It helps SES bring in students and faculty who could go anywhere and choose UMass Amherst instead. It generates solutions, technology, and ideas relevant to the challenges our region and our global partners are actually facing. It builds systems of renewing collaboration, so that as circumstances change and new opportunities and challenges emerge, SES can respond rather than start over.

This work carries forward our land grant mission and a shared, ever-present commitment to the common good. It reflects a collective focus on a more hopeful, positive future for the Commonwealth: its citizens, its places, its traditions, and the nonliving beings and systems we share this region with.
