Special Guest Lecture: Dr. Swenja Surminski, London School of Economics
Surminski is a leading international expert on sustainability and insurance, nature-based solutions, climate adaptation and resilience. Her work spans across research, practice and policy. She holds a role as Professor in Practice at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and is also Managing Director Climate and Sustainability at Marsh McLennan (MMC), the world’s leading professional services firm in the area of risk, people and strategy. In that role she is working across MMC’s four businesses Marsh, Guy Carpenter, Mercer and Oliver Wyman to develop innovative solutions and strategies in the climate and nature space, including risk transfer and investment mechanisms. In 2022 Swenja was appointed to the UK Government's Committee on Climate Change and elected chair of the not for profit Munich Climate Insurance Initiative.
Swenja’s current work has a special focus on risk financing, insurance and risk governance, overseeing projects with a geographic scope ranging from the United Kingdom across the EU and China to developing countries. Swenja has published widely on these topics, and is a contributing author to the IPCC and the EU Science for Disaster Risk Management Report, and lead author of the UK's Climate Change Risk Assessment.
