Why Caribbean Islands?
The Caribbean is in the midst of a transition to renewable energies. At the same time, many island states and other dependencies still rely on fossil-fuel-powered generators for electricity production, and increasingly for freshwater production via desalination. In the last few years, the region has been devastated by hurricanes. The Virgin Islands, in particular, is a “hot spot” for studying the convergence of the low-carbon energy transition, disasters, and climate change; and will offer an opportunity for workshop participants to witness firsthand the scale of coastal climate impacts on energy infrastructure while providing an opportunity for a case study on how to mediate future disasters.
