STEMPOWER Fellowship

The image above is a collage of participating faculty and students throughout 2023-2026.

Funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the STEMPOWER program is a partnership between UMass Amherst and UMass Boston that aims to expand the pathways of students pursuing graduate studies and careers in STEM. Undergraduate fellows are paired with faculty and graduate student mentors to build their research experience and increase their knowledge of graduate degree educational and career pathways in a supportive community.

The program also works with faculty to strengthen their mentoring practices through training and reflection, encouraging the faculty to form a learning community and use individualized approaches to support their undergraduate mentees' progress. They are positioned as change agents, shifting lab and advising cultures away from one-size-fits-all models toward more inclusive, student-centered environments.

The STEMPOWER program started as a collaboration between UMass Amherst and UMass Boston in two fields—computer science and engineering—led by UMass Amherst. Now we have expanded to include students and faculty from more academic fields including physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Our program is now led by UMass Boston.
